Abstract
Serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in 20 cases of normal nonpregnant woman, 32 cases of early pregnancy, 7 cases of hydatidiform mole and 10 cases of choriocarcinoma from October, 1976 to July, 1977 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of St. Mary`s Hospital, Catholic Medical College. 1. Serum alpha-fetopretein(AFP) levels in normal nonpregnant women were in a range of 0 to 15ng/ml. 2. During early pregnancy maternal serum AFP levels begin tobe increased gradually from 12th week of pregnancy, and its regression equation according to week of pregnancy were as follow: Y=20.4X-228.0(r=0.975, p<0.01, Y=value of serum AFP, X=week of pregnancy) 3. Serum AFP levels were measured below its value of normal nonpregnant women in six of seven patients with hydatidiform mole. 4. Serum AFP levels were not different from normal non-pregnant women in 10 patients with choriocarcinoma. It showed no remarkable change after chemotherapy and surgical managment.
